Nursing Equipment: Requirements And Options
For a new nurse, many new opportunities and experiences lie ahead. Of course, these will differ with the specifications of differing areas of specialization. Beginning nurses, like any new professionals, are expected to begin with an outfit of basic nursing equipment. Some employers will specify the materials connected to specific jobs. However, some requirements are the same regardless of the institution.
Aside from individual pieces of specialty equipment that may be required from a given employer, the standard nursing equipment consists mostly of uniforms, shoes, watch, gait belt, and bandage scissors. Usually, penlights, stethoscope, and so on, are included in the list of basics for nursing professionals.
The most vital piece of nursing equipment is definitely a quality stethoscope. Stethoscopes are indispensable to a nurse's job and has a place in many exams and routine office visits. It's best to get a versatile stethoscope that is suitable for use on adults, children, and infants.
Tops, trousers, jackets, caps, etc make up nursing scrubs (the uniform). These outfits show a professional appearance for the staff and help to distinguish the nursing staff in their different departments and practices. These uniforms also help to maintain a vital hygienic environment and to assist in preventing the spread of germs.
Three items are required of nearly every nurse: shoes, a watch, and a gait belt. Because nurses are on their feet all day, shoes should be serviceable and comfortable. In addition, a watch is a requirement. The watch should be easy to read, have a second hand, and be waterproof. The watch should be waterproof because nurses must wash their hands with great frequency. Finally, a gait belt is useful for moving patients and helping patients walk safely.
Nurses usually carry a few necessary items with them at all time for patient care. They include a stethoscope, a sphygmomanometer for blood pressure checks and a pen hung around the neck for recording patient information. Some nurses keep a medical dictionary, nursing handbook, pocket calculator and bandage scissors close by for easy use.
But you can always be prepared with a nursing kit, which typically contains standard medical equipment such as stethoscopes, blood pressure cuff, scissors, penlights, kelly clamps, measuring tape, and an ID badge holder. All the equipment contained in the kit is for the diagnosis or treatment of certain medical issues or conditions. Of course, high standards are maintained so that the integrity of these instruments is top-notch.
Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities; prevention of illness and injury; alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human responses; and advocacy in health care for individuals, families, communities, and populations.
